The clearest expression of these two strands emerged in my work produced in Spain during my nine months tenure as a Fulbright grantee ending in the summer of 2002. This was a natural extension of my work during my years at college when I struggled with my cultural identity as an individual who grew up as a Mexican and who was infused with the powerful images that abound in Mexico only to be transported, when I was ten, by my American father to the United States to complete my education. I was forced to experience the significance of distinctive cultural realities. As I have matured, I have made a great effort to define these distinctive realities emotionally, intellectually, and artistically."
